This is the best Indian I have been to, I have not been to another Indian since trying this one because I know the food will not be as nice. The restaurant is very close to the city centre (close to Lime Street Station), however it is in a random street with not so nice places around - but don't let this put you off. The decor is just a traditional curry house, nothing special. But the menu and taste of the food is amazing, delicious, everyone should try it. It does not have the usual curry names, but everyone we have tried has been good. I love the lental/spinach based curry (can't remember the name), it is nice and light but very more-ish. The chicken nadan curry is good too. They also have an amazing choice of breads - again not the usual nann bread but different types, all worth trying. The 'Dosa' is a massive tube shaped bread - definitely try this.

I have tried a few different Indian restaurants in my time and have found restaurants like the Maharaja relatively rare. In constrast to the 'standard Indian' (all the same menus, most made in bulk from the same curry base) Maharaja pride themselves on Kerala (southern Indian) cuisine. The majority of meals are made from scratch, mainoly comprising coconut milk, bananas, mangoes , seafood (etc...) - very different from you standard 'curry house'. They make all of their sauces/dips fresh on site, the quality/service is excellent, and the place is CLEAN! Speaking honestly, the prices are slightly higher than other Indian restaurants but you should consider the effort and service in which you get so much more for your money. I would recommend this place to all, but particularly to those who usually go for the standard 'chicken tikka' once in a while in order to gain a wider slice of perspective on southern Indian cuisine.
The Maharaja on London Road is without doubt the best Indian restaurant in Liverpool. Once you get over the rather drab location of London Road and the cheap - but not terribly garish - interior, you are in for a treat. Don't go if you always order the same from your Indian take-away and aren't open to try new things, because you won't recognise a single dish on the menu! No Kormas, Tikka Masalas or Vindaloos here. The Maharaja serves Kerala dishes, from the South West Coast of India. Dishes seem very light and fragrant, and the menu has a great Seafood and Vegetarian selection. Staff are very knowledgeable and friendly and stopped us from over-ordering a few times when the menu just seemed too tempting! The set meal at lunchtime is particularly good value, £6 for 3 curry dishes, rice, bread and dessert. However, the dessert are the one thing at Maharaja that aren't outstanding, I'd recommend going for another starter or side dish instead!
